Gyrocopter Flight Training

Based out of Shobden Airfield

Gyrocopter Flight Training is an extraordinary journey into the skies, offering a unique blend of thrill and skill. As a leading provider of gyrocopter flight training in the UK, our aim is to deliver an experience that transcends the ordinary realms of aviation.

Based in the serene and picturesque countryside of Shobdon in Herefordshire, our training facility is not just a centre for learning; it's a starting point for aerial adventures. With vast stretches of unrestricted airspace above us, every flight is an opportunity to explore and enjoy the true essence of flying. This setting is not only perfect for beginners but also for those who wish to refine their piloting skills in an unconfined environment.

Our training ethos revolves around the concept of freedom - a freedom reminiscent of the early days of driving, now brought back to life through the joy of gyrocopter flying. We offer comprehensive training that includes both the practical aspects of flying and the theoretical knowledge required to master the skies. Our courses are designed to challenge and engage you, ensuring a deep understanding of the art of gyrocopter flying.

Shobdon's professional, yet friendly Flight Information Service team adds to the enriching experience at our training centre. They play a crucial role in helping our trainees develop confidence in key areas such as radio communications, which is vital for safe and enjoyable flying. Tom Galloway, our experienced instructor and Ground Examiner, leads the training with a passion that is both infectious and inspiring.

Our structured training programme is designed to cater to various learning preferences. We offer detailed online and printed course materials, including Gyropedia, an extensive repository of training syllabus, course notes, and flight briefings, complemented by in-flight video demonstrations. This blend of resources ensures a thorough and flexible learning experience.

The journey to obtaining a Private Pilot’s Licence (Gyroplane) is tailored to match your individual pace and ability. Our training is designed to adapt to your commitment levels and skill development, ensuring a personalised and effective learning path.

For those contemplating gyrocopter flight training, we encourage a visit to our facility to discuss your specific goals and requirements. To give you a head start, here's some essential information:

Prospective pilots can start training at any age, though solo flights are permitted from 16 years, and applying for the PPL(G) is possible at 17. Medical fitness can be self-declared via the CAA Pilot Medical Declaration form, or through an NPPL medical declaration, Part‐Med Class1,2 or LAPL medical certificate.

The requirements for the PPL(G) include completing the designated CAA syllabus, a minimum of 40 hours of flight training, passing a general flying test, and succeeding in various theoretical subjects such as Aviation Law and Gyroplane Technical.

For pilots with a UK-issued licence in another category, we offer the possibility of crediting up to 15 hours of flight training and exemption from all theory exams except Gyroplane Technical.

At our gyrocopter flight training centre, we are committed to providing an experience that not only teaches you how to fly but also instills a lifelong passion for the skies. We welcome you to join us and embrace the thrilling world of gyrocopter flying, where each flight is more than just a journey - it's an adventure.
